Questions and Ramblings from an ASG member circa 1995

Post by RevRaven » Sat Jun 18, 2005 2:00 am

Greetings and hello.

I was in the ASG back in the day, when it was founded in 1995 by Lisa Emerson AKA Kaori AKA Kaeori AKA Jadzia Tiyaje' Eisheth Kaeori. I vaugly remember Neon and Mulder, and I think I remember Seth as well (nothing against anyone or anything, but it's been 10 years). Basically, I'm really sad to see that the ASG has apparently died, but so is the nature of things. I would however like to see how much of stuff still exists.

For one, is there any historical accounts or old files still floating around? Is there anything resembling a history for the group as a whole, let alone the various splinter factions that popped up? How many numbers did the ASG have at it's peak? What ships, sims, et al did they have? Just how wide and vast was the diversification; when there was an AOL branch and an IRC branch and so on? Is there anyone even left from the original founding? Does anyone remember the incredibly difficult entrance test Kaeori had put in place?

I'm not meaning to ramble, but I really mean this. Who remembers the old Ten Forward Lounge on AOL? The Academy meeting and training sims? Does anyone recall the RolePlaying Areas on AOL, specifically the section/sections specifically set aside for the ASG? What all groups did they absorb, and who left to form their own group? Please, there has to be answers from someone, and this is about the last place left to ask them.

The exact date of the forming of the ASG, to my knowledge, is lost to the sands of time. However I can say that it did happen sometime in June/July 1995, and the Decade Anniversary of the ASG is virtually here. Even if this is just a memorial, please........Someone...anyone......help answer some of my questions.

Thank you for reading thus far, and I'd personally like to give a big thanks to the original founding ASG, for without it I wouldn't have embraced the Internet as I did...and the last 10 years of my life wouldn't have been half as much fun. Now push the button, Frank.

That's pretty interesting. I know I've asked several people, even Neon at one point who the founder was. It's crazy to me that you actuallyl remember her real name. I showed up in either late 96 or early 97 but was just a lowly cadet for a good portion of my time. I have to admit I am curious about some things. But here is what I know about offshoots.

Sknt, Misty, Coitster1(David), and a few others split off and formed the SFA. That crashed some time in 97 I think. A lower ranked individual but I think she was one of the early members, named Alfa, split off and formed the ASA. I joined the ASA and split my time between that and the ASG, mostly because I was bored out of my mind. The ASA was up and down and I don't know that we could say it was officially dead until recently. But there was never a steady core of members except for about a year's worth of time covering '97-'98. I know there were other offshoots. I ran into one guy who was trying to create a new group but I have no idea how that went. The only two I was involved with were the SFA and ASA.

So question. I heard at some point that Mulder and a few other people were actually even younger than I was when they started in the ASG. Was Kaori too? At the height of my participation the group was led mostly by adults which I think was kind of a good thing, so it was always weird to me that at one point it was Neon, Seth, Mulder, and a few other people running the show who were actually even younger than I was. Well..so the story goes. For that matter...how old are you? Age shouldn't matter I guess, but I just think it's interesting.

As I recall, Kaori was 15 when she started the ASG in 1995. I am 22, and I was 12/13 at the time of my involvement with the ASG. Kaori and I were friends, both in and outside of the group, so she's always stood out in my mind.

When I was involved, the ASG was a small little group. Kaori was the XO on the USS Aurora (I'm not sure if it is the same Aurora that was later a ship in the ASG) that I was the tactical officer of. After she left, I was promoted to her fomer rank, but the sim was disbanded shortly after.

I learned how to play with a group of independent players on indie ships, and my former CO was leaving the Internet. He trained me how to command a ship and run a sim, and "gifted" me his two ships: The USS Destroyer and the USS Celtic Warrior (the former being a Defiant-esque Starfleet Marines battleship and the later being an old Miranda class junker). I was trying to find a crew for the Destroyer when I "refound" Kaori and was given her extremely hard enterence exam to join the fledging ASG. I stayed with the ASG until the early months of 1996 (shortly after Kaori resigned), when my schedule didn't permit the time needed to seriously take part in the group.

But yeah. Well I'm glad that someone replied, maybe someone else can join in? And stuff!

Just so as not to scare anyone, Games means Role Playing communities I think. Not nude communities, or Socialist communities. Or do you.....hmmmmm.... Games? Something you aren't telling us? Starting a cult are you?

I could probably go into lengthy detail about the history of ASG -- not because I was there to watch it happen, mind you. I joined circa '97, after all -- but because I enjoyed looking into it back when I was a member.

I won't, though. Not because I am mean, but because I might get a lot of stuff wrong and there won't be anyone to correct me. Also, I am lazy.

In any case, Raven, if you're interested in locating Kaori, she had a webpage at http://www.kaeori.net/ -- I don't know if she still keeps it or if that will help at all, but give it your best shot.

Best wishes.

I still have some files; mostly sim logs, copies of all the newsletters that were produced (including the UFA before we were absorbed by the ASG, perhaps some of the fleet ones in old mail archives), and a handbook or two. It's been long enough that dates escape me, but I started with the UFA (recruited by Dal) when I was in high school. I'll be 25 in November.

I keep meaning to upload all of the stuff that I have to the website, especially the newsletters, but I always put it off. Probably because every time I look at the code I wrote way back when, get scared, and run away. It's so crappy compared to what I know now. =) In the meantime, I keep paying the domain renewal fee and the website stays running, and the logboards are here.

Perhaps a museum of files and stuff from the olden days would be interesting for anyone who happens by this place?

I think that'd be a great idea Seth. As you can see, I haven't happened by in quite a few months. But I do think it would be pretty cool. Who knows what the future will hold for us all anyway?

Heh yup I was talking to a guy that wanted to do a history of simming who had done a lot of editing on the Wikipedia entry. I can't remember if he said he set it up or not. I gave him quite a large amount of information and a lot of contacts.

Wow somebody really cut down on the information at Wikipedia. Makes sense to me because if you use too many names people's pride gets in the way of the cold hard facts.
